CarePartners Outpatient Services: Physical Therapy with Wii™ Games

Physical rehabilitation isn’t all hard work; it can be fun too. Patients at CarePartners can use a wildly popular video game system to help them get back on their feet.

“Wii-habilitation” puts CarePartners patients on the road to recovery.
Wii™ is a type of video-game system by Nintendo in which a player uses a motion-sensitive wand to go through the same movements he or she would in sports such as tennis, bowling, golf, baseball or bowling. An animated character on a TV screen carries out the player’s motions.

In physical therapy, playing Wii™ can help patients make many kinds of improvements:
  • Physical Ability
    • Coordination
    • Range of motion
    • Strength and stability
    • Weight bearing
    • Fine and gross motor skills
  • Perceptual & Mental Ability
    • Problem solving
    • Attention span
    • Short- and long-term memory
    • Decision making
    • Scanning
Playing Wii™ can also make rehabilitation a better experience for patients. The game releases an inner competitiveness in some patients that allows them to have fun while doing the strenuous, repetitive and sometimes monotonous exercises of a rehab regimen.
