Lymphedema is uncomfortable.
People who have had surgery or radiation therapy sometimes develop lymphedema, resulting from damage or deficiency in the lymph system. Symptoms include:
- Heaviness, weakness, tightness, aching or discomfort in arm or leg.
- Swelling in arm or leg.
- Reduced flexibility or range of motion in arm or leg.
- Hardening, thickening or reddening of the skin on arm or leg.
- Tight-fitting rings, shoes or clothing.
Our specially certified physical and occupational therapists use a combination of treatment methods including:
- Special massage to move lymph fluid away from nodes or vessels that aren’t working, to ones that are.
- Using special bandages or garments to reduce swelling, improve circulation and prevent the re-accumulation of lymph fluid.
- Exercises designed to help the muscular system pump lymph fluid away from the affected area.
