CarePartners Outpatient Services: Driver’s Evaluation

To get into a car independently and go wherever you want, whenever you want, is a special and valued privilege. For individuals with a disabling condition, it’s often as important as being able to walk or use a wheelchair.

“Will I be able to drive again?” CarePartners can help you find out.
Driver's evaluation is a comprehensive analysis performed by an occupational therapist (OT). It is used to ensure a person's safe return to driving following an illness or injury. It can also help determine whether an individual can learn to drive for the first time with a disability.

Evaluation starts with indoor testing before you go behind the wheel.
Driving history, vision screening, reaction time and, if needed, cognitive testing (test of thinking skills) make up the first part of a driver’s evaluation. This takes place inside the Outpatient Center on the main campus of CarePartners Health Services, located at 68 Sweeten Creek Road in Asheville, North Carolina.

The next step is an actual behind-the-wheel testing in parking lots, residential areas, in traffic and on highways. The car used for testing is owned by CarePartners and is fully equipped for individuals with handicapping conditions. In certain circumstances, patients may also use their own vehicle.

A summary of results is then provided that includes overall recommendations and advice on any adaptive equipment needs. Specialized training is also provided for those requiring hand-controlled driving.

How to make an appointment for a driver’s evaluation.
Ask your doctor to write a prescription for a driver’s evaluation. Call (828) 274-6179 to schedule your driver’s evaluation appointment. When you come for your appointment, bring a current license or a learner's permit.
